MDHA’s Resident Services Department consists of approximately 30 staff who manage the programming and resources available to the individuals and families we serve. These include the Family Self-Sufficiency program, Financial Freedom Workshops, community health initiatives and workforce development training. Employees are also responsible for building relationships with partners who can provide additional services.
2025 Scholarship Opportunities
Listed below are scholarship opportunities for high school students living at MDHA properties and those who are voucher program participants. There is also an opportunity for adult students. Tennessee Association of Housing and Redevelopment Authorities (TAHRA)
- TAHRA Adult Scholarship – Tailored for outstanding adults in public housing programs, this initiative evaluates applicants through recommendations, resumes and personal statements. Apply by April 1, 2024.
- TAHRA Freshman Scholarship – Designed for outstanding students in public housing programs, including Section 8, this initiative rewards academic excellence, unique talents and financial need. Apply by April 1, 2025.
Public Housing Authorities Directors Association (PHADA)
- PHDA Scholarship Program – Since 1985, PHADA has recognized and rewarded academic excellence in public and assisted housing youth through its scholarship program. In 2025, PHADA will proudly award three scholarships to deserving high school seniors residing in public and assisted housing.

Programs and Resources
The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program promotes employment and economic growth for MDHA residents and voucher program participants.

The MDHA Work Readiness Program helps individuals identify their barriers to work and advocate for their removal. This assistance can include driver’s license reinstatement services, expungement services, job opportunities and more.

The Financial Freedom Workshop teaches the tools of becoming successful and self-sufficient by understanding credit, increasing savings, managing money and more. Graduates may enroll in the Homebuyers’ Club.

MDHA is now accepting applicants for the HiSET Program. This program will help you prepare to take the HiSET Exam, which provides the opportunity to earn a high school equivalency diploma (GED).

Resident Associations are made up of MDHA residents who volunteer their time to organize events and resources for their neighbors. There are Resident Associations at 22 MDHA properties. Call the Resident Services Information Line to get involved or learn more.
MDHA Community Health Workers support the health and wellness of our residents by planning baby showers, food distributions, resource fairs, organizing vaccine clinics and helping elderly residents stay active with exercise classes.
